Abkhazia's greatest challenge in the coming years lies in redeveloping the economy. The Soviet Communist Model had devastating consequences for Abkhazia as for the entire former Soviet Union. After ratifying its Constitution in 1994 and declaring its independence from Georgia, Abkhazia has embarked on a path toward market Capitalism and promotion of Abkhazian industry. The Government of Abkhazia is committed to establishing free market economy, based on private ownership of property, encouragement of foreign investment, western-style banking, and the promotion of a favorable business climate. |

Abkhazia not only is blessed with a favorable climate and great natural beauty; it also possesses an abundance of strategic natural resources. Abkhazia has more forests and timber than Austria. It also has enormous supply of spring water. Along with the major cash crops of citrus, tea, and tobacco, Abkhaz farmers cultivate olives, grapes, and a large assortment of indigenous plant species. |

Abkhazia to date has a population of approximately 300,000. Since the middle of the 19th Century, the Russian policies regarding the Caucasus has been to expel the local inhabitants, forcing them to emigrate to Turkey in the Mid East. Concurrently, Russians, Armenians and Georgians were settled into Abkhazia. This policy continued under Bolsheviks after the Revolution of 1917 and peaked under the Stalin era. At present there are over one hundred thirty five thousand ethnic Abkhazians (total population 200,000) currently residing in Abkhazia with Russians, Armenians Georgians, Greeks, and Jews comprising most of the remainder of the Abkhazian population. |
