The Amtsakhara movement is the central opposition party in the Republic of Abkhazia. They originally formed as an association of veterans of the 1992-93 war with Georgia, but have since broadened their membership to include the wider community. Abkhazia is one of the countries which appeared on the modern map following the breakdown of the USSR. There was a war between Abkhazia and Georgia in 1992-93. It caused a lot of disruption and strife in this country which until recently was one of the busiest tourist areas of the Caucasus. It has been a few years now since the war ended but infrastructure in the country improving very slowly. There is a high level of unemployment. The system of education in the country inherited from Soviet times is not able to provide for all of children’s needs. After school education simply does not exist. Many children are in need of treatment as they suffer from post traumatic syndrome. There is a lot of psychological tension in this country where the political problem has not yet been resolved.
